Stronger Together: The Power of Partnership in Patient Care at Pro-active Physio and Pilates, Tewkesbury

At Pro-Active Physio & Pilates Tewkesbury, we believe exceptional patient care is built on collaboration.

Whether someone is recovering from surgery, managing a longstanding musculoskeletal condition, returning to sport after injury, or looking to maintain their independence, the best outcomes are rarely achieved in isolation. They come from healthcare professionals working together, sharing expertise and placing the patient at the centre of every decision.

Over the years, we’ve developed strong relationships with a network of trusted specialists across Gloucestershire and beyond. These partnerships, in both private and public sectors, allow us to provide seamless, coordinated care, ensuring our patients have access to the right support, at the right time, from the right professional.

This collaborative approach is one of the many reasons patients choose Pro-Active Physio & Pilates Tewkesbury over other clinics as part of their healthcare journey.

Who We Work With:

Mr Navraj Atwal, Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon | Hip, Knee & Sports Injuries

Mr Navraj Atwal is a highly respected Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon specialising in hip and knee surgery, sports injuries, knee preservation procedures and joint replacement surgery. Based in Gloucestershire at both private and NHS hospitals he is recognised for his expertise in treating both active individuals and those living with arthritis and degenerative joint conditions. He works both privately at the Nuffield and Winfield whilst also working for the NHS in Gloucestershire.

How We Work Together

Many patients begin their journey with physiotherapy before considering surgery, while others come to us after a procedure to optimise their recovery.

Working alongside specialists such as Mr Atwal enables us to provide:

  • Pre-operative physiotherapy and preparation
  • Post-operative rehabilitation following knee and hip surgery
  • Sports injury rehabilitation
  • Strength and conditioning programmes
  • Return-to-sport planning
  • Long-term arthritis management

This integrated approach helps ensure patients are physically prepared for surgery when needed and supported throughout every stage of their recovery.

Mr Rathnam Sundaram

Consultant Spine Surgeon | Back & Neck Specialist

Back pain is one of the most common reasons people seek physiotherapy treatment, and for some patients specialist spinal input is required.

Mr Rathnam Sundaram, Consultant Trauma, Orthopaedic and Spine Surgeon and Spine Lead for Gloucestershire Hospitals, is one of the region’s most experienced spinal specialists. His expertise includes the management of spinal stenosis, sciatica, spondylolisthesis, cervical spine conditions and complex spinal disorders.

How We Work Together

Most spinal conditions can be managed successfully through conservative treatment such as physiotherapy, exercise prescription and education and Mr Sundaram will often encourage you to try this line of approach first. However, some patients benefit from further investigation, injections, or a specialist surgical opinion.

Our collaborative pathway allows patients to access:

  • Early assessment and intervention
  • Evidence-based physiotherapy
  • Specialist spinal referrals when appropriate
  • Expert post-operative rehabilitation
  • Long-term exercise and self-management strategies
  • Ongoing support to restore confidence and movement

By combining specialist spinal expertise with tailored rehabilitation, patients receive truly joined-up care from diagnosis through to recovery.

Lewis Brand Orthotics

Specialist Orthotic & Bracing Solutions

Sometimes recovery requires more than rehabilitation alone.

For patients experiencing biomechanical issues, neurological conditions or long-term musculoskeletal problems, orthotic intervention can play a key role in improving comfort, mobility and function.

This is where our partnership with Lewis Brand Orthotics is particularly valuable.

How We Work Together

By combining physiotherapy with specialist orthotic assessment, we can help patients achieve better movement patterns and improved long-term outcomes.

Examples of collaborative care include:

  • Foot and ankle rehabilitation
  • Custom orthotic prescription
  • Management of gait abnormalities
  • Support for neurological conditions
  • Knee bracing and stability solutions
  • Post-surgical rehabilitation

Physiotherapy and orthotics often complement one another perfectly. While rehabilitation focuses on improving strength, function and movement, orthotic devices can provide the support needed to maximise those gains.

The Cobalt Centre

Supporting Health, Wellbeing & Recovery Across Gloucestershire

At Pro-Active Physio & Pilates Tewkesbury, we understand that rehabilitation extends beyond treating symptoms.

Long-term health and wellbeing are often influenced by a broad range of factors, including lifestyle, support networks and access to specialist services. This is why we value our relationship with The Cobalt Centre, a Gloucestershire charity dedicated to supporting individuals through diagnostic, therapeutic and wellbeing services.

How We Work Together

Many patients benefit from access to a wider support network during their recovery journey.

Through our relationship with The Cobalt Centre, patients may be signposted towards services that complement their physiotherapy treatment and support their overall health and recovery. Most likely we will refer you directly to the COBALT for a private MRI scan in order to rule out any serious illnesses or to assess significant ligament or bony injuries such as an ACL tear. Or, for example, to look for spinal problems such as a disc prolapse or a subtle spinal fracture. We can refer you directly from here at our clinic and discuss your results with you within about 2 weeks of your scan.

This can be particularly helpful for individuals:

  • To help your physio or orthopaedic team decide if surgery is needed or whether standard rehab and medication or bracing will help.
  • To diagnose serious conditions such as cancer/tumours, fractures or inflammatory back pain early on.
  • To establish time lines for recovery and return to sport.
  • To guide rehabilitation pathways for your physiotherapist.

Why It Matters

Healthcare is most effective when patients feel supported at every stage of their journey.

Alongside expert physiotherapy, trusted consultants and specialist orthotic services, organisations such as The Cobalt Centre help support our diagnoses and recovery pathways and helps provide additional reassurance for our patients.
